See a gallery of pictures here or the full gallery here.

We set off down the hill in glorious sunshine, soon I find myself in the lead - this was not in my race plan of following for at least the first 10 miles so I slow down a bit. The first big climb of the day up past Leeshaw Reservoir is taken at quite a tough pace and a couple of people edge past me, which is fine as I have not a clue where I am going.

Then comes a long and pleasant grassy descent following a conduit in which the pace goes steady. I decide to tuck in and chat to Paul a bit about races coming up and the Three Peaks, after all we have a long way to go.

So it took me approximately 3.5 minutes to check out the London Triathlonwebsite, dig out my credit card and grace them with approximately 70 quid for the pleasure of chuckin myself into a corner of the Royal Victoria Dock joy!Five minutes later, I start to take an empirical view of what Ive just doneBike Check (albeit a mountain bike)Wetsuit errmh, No!A passion for swimming errmh, No! I actually need to overcome a fear of outdoor water, I forgot that bit!Trainers CheckLegs CheckTime to train Are you havin a laugh - Im a working mother! So here I am, some 10ish months later having cycled my legs sore, swam at Spenborough in my wetsuit on pensionersday, sending them all into instant cardiac arrest at the mere sight, had a couple of baptisms in Costa Del Pugneys and now heading down to London at the weekend, nursing badly blistered and weeping feet, why? Cos it seemed like agood idea to do a club run with elastic laces and no socks in twice warn trainers - tut tut!

Meanwhile he will be doing the hilly Spen 20 mile race in preparation on the 18th of March. Two runners who will be hoping to get near Hall's record time in the London will be Andrew Guiseley and Andrew Cottier, and Guiseley will be heading for the Spen 20 mile race in preparation, and follow that a week later with the Ackworth Half Marathon.Cottier ran the Tafford 10K last Sunday in a respectable 34th of the 362 runners in a time of 36mins8sec.Another hoping for a time under 3 hours and lead our ladies home will be Treena Johnson.

At point A the route enters the woods and takes a short sharp climb to point B. At B turn right up the main path through a gate opening to point C (A to C may be recognised as part of the Baildon Boundary Way). At C the route diverts left up another sharp climb to the wall corner and a loop back to F (points D and E are distinct left turns). From point F the route again picks up the Baildon Boundary Way to point G). Point G is a left hand turn BEFORE reaching the stile. Follow the main path from G to H crossing a stream by footbridge and crossing stile at H onto the main path.At H turn left under the railway bridge keeping left (the section H to I will have 2 way traffic but will be well marked). At Point I take a short diversion into the woods on the left emerging back on to the stoney track. Turn left up the stoney track until reaching Coach Rd J. Turn right at the top of the track and immediately right again into the fields. Turn immediately left in the fields and head to the field corner K. At the field corner turn right and follow the walked path back down to the stoney track (this section will be recognised as the reverse of the finish of the Guiseley Gallop). Turn left on reaching the stoney track back under the railway bridge (keeping left) and then continue straight ahead down the main track for some distance.Towards the bottom of the main track a path swings off to the left (L), follow this path up and over the railway line. After the bridge over the railway line (M), turn right down a narrow track over a footbridge and then back up to Gill Lane (N). On reaching Gill Lane, turn right and run down the road to another bridge. At the metal gate bear left into the woods (O) and follow a track down through the woods until reaching a main track (P). At the main track turn right back towards Gill Lane. At Gill Lane turn left then almost immediately right and right again (Q) down a sharp bank to a stream. Cross through the stream and up the hill continuing on to the far end of the woods (R). At the far end of the woods the route turns back on itself and comes almost back to the stream before turning right and right again (S) onto the main track heading back towards Esholt. At Spring Lane turn right then almost immediately left (T) up a narrow path back in to the woods. Follow the route through the woods climbing up to meet the main path at a stile (U).Turn left over the stile and continue on the main path to the gate opening in the wall (point C revisited). Through the gate opening take a narrow path diagonally off to the right (V) running along the top of the woods. Continue along this narrow path until reaching a short descent back to the main path. Turn left back up the main path (past point B again) and continue up the path almost to the gate opening in the wall. Here the route turns right down through the woods (this will be recognised as the reverse of the route taken up through the woods in the Guiseley Gallop) to reach the finish by the entrance to the woods (point A).Drinks/Changing afterwards at Esholt Sports Club PLEASE REMOVE ALL MUDDY SHOES BEFORE ENTERING THE CLUBHOUSE.

Park in Oakwell Hall Country Park car park (see P on map) or on the main A652 Bradford-Dewsbury road. Full details of the course and directions are given later on in this article. The course is hilly, ran on paths, turf and woodland, and unsuitable for spikes (total height gained is 550 ft, see profile further down). It consists of 3 loops which cover the grounds of the park and north of the M62. The approximate length is 4.75 miles, and will be well taped and marshalled. Please follow the instructions from the Marshal's as there is a couple of points where runners may cross - It will be advised that runners stay to their right. We have arranged to meet after the race at the White Bear Public House situated approximatly 1 mile from the park. Full directions will be given on the day, but it is virtually an immediate left turn, doubling back on yourself as you leave the car park, carrying on along the road, passing a childrens play area on your left, turning right along Kings Drive. The White Bear is at the end of the drive. Signs will be put out on the day pointing you in the right direction, if I remember!!!We hope that many of you can stay, as the landlady is willing to put hot food on for us.

I decide I am not going to keep this up and try to run at a more sensible pace for an old b**tard like me. A drag up to Oakenshaw and then we turn left and we have a nice run down to Hunsworth. When we get to the bottom of Hunsworth my head feels as though it's going to explode, we turn and start climbing back up.Some guys in front who passed me previously are beginning to walk, this looks promising as I gradually pass them and reach the entrance to the Fire Station.I see one guy in front who I recognise from Strathclyde Fire Brigade, who I normally have a tussle with, he is walking, I pass him slowly and head for the finish, he suddenly steams past me and I can do nothing to respond. I finish and grab a drink.Thank God that's over.%[339]%

I try to forget about this, but Julian looks decidely nervous right up the the whistle! The route is 11 miles long (theoretic minimum) and clocks up 4400 feet of climbing. Basically, your run up to the Helvellyn ridge from the north, near Great Dodd, then run the ridge to the summit cairn of Helvellyn and back. The gruesome start lives up to expectations, 1500 feet on grass mainly, with nothing to break up the strain on the calves - i resort to zig-zagging. At the top the climb continues at a lesser gradient - but is still un-runnable. When I do reach the checkpoint my legs are like jelly, and I cant run at all for a while. The ridge is no cakewalk either, with constantly changing terrain, from boulder fields to narrow troughed paths, you never find any rythmn and you are constantly being challenged by route decisions over boggy bits, rocky outcrops etc. Here I am approaching the summit of Raise.

After all there's no backpack to carry and they actually feed you, and its only 100 miles (a normal training week). I decided it would be good to run it this year and take my wife Julie as she had taken up running and wanted to run a multi stage race.

Here if find Bill, Martin, Rodger and Andy ( apologies if I have forgotten anyone else). After the usual lecture about obeying marshals and the roads being open to traffic the race starts.Down the back straight and round the bend then out of the gate through the Car Park and onto the road toward Cleckheaton. As we go through the gate, to my surprise I find myself in the lead. This strange situation continues to the Bus station ( about 1mile) when the winner of the race come past and the pulls away up the climb.Still in Second place at the top of the first climb (2 miles) but I can tell there is a group hard on my heels.Up the next climb the guy who ends up second comes past me and as the winner had done before he pulls away. The rest of the group are still hard on my heels. I think they are just letting me take the wind especially on the exposed section between miles 3 and 4.As we run through Clifton village 1 guy pulls up level with me, I recognise him as some one I do battle with quite often. We run neck and neck all the way through Clifton and Hartshead, and we drop the rest of the chasing group. On the hill up to Roberttown he takes the lead but by the top (8 miles) I have regained 3rd place. He remains just behind me down the hill and past the 9 mile marker. In the last mile I manage to pull out a lead and get 3rd place in a time of 1 hour 30secs.Martin comes in, in seventh place, Andy in the top 20 and Rodger has a good run as he continues to get back to form.Treena did well and got third lady and Heather had a good run.Bill unfortunately had to pull out after a couple of miles due to an injury.Treena and I both got matching fleece jumpers as prizes for being 3rd man and lady. Creams all very well for the ladies but its not quite me, however I last saw it hanging in Lindas wardrobe. So my training tip for a Hilly 10 mile road race is a 200 K walk over the fortnight before!

The sun is now hot, I buy some special ankle plasters which seem to really help my sore ankles. Then, after spotting Russel, I buy a lighter rain mac, and find a superior way of storing it in my camelbak.A result! I now feel kitted out, and there is not long to go. I toss my keys to Russels brother in law and adjust my bum bag - this is it!

Get the excuses in early, thats what I say!The weather was beautiful, and the sun felt worryingly strong. Several Americans hassled me over the bunny ears I was wearing - apparently pacemakers wear them in races in their parts (?).
