He was an active member in the late 80s and early 90s. His best performances were over shorter distances and he represented the Club in the Cross Country League and in local races such as Chevin Chase.A committed athlete, he excelled at speed sessions and hill reps.More recently Andy could be seen as a flash of Lycra in the Chain Gang with other local cycling club members. He was equally committed to cycling, raced on his road bike and was well known and liked by friends at Dewsbury Sports Centre being regularly involved in Group Sessions such as Body Pump.On Sunday morning 18th March, Andy took part in a time trial on the A1. Tragically, he was in fatal accident involved with an articulated lorry.Andy lived with his mum in Mirfield.A very sad loss.Julian Lusardi- friend, fellow runner, fellow cyclist.

Thats a lot of climb and a lot of descent. Bob Graham legs typically take in 10 or so summits, but they tend to be a succession of smaller reclimbs. Mind, there doesnt appear to be any Bessy Boot like climbs and a lot of the terrain Im familiar with from BG days so it doesnt seem too frightening, hopefully there will be some runnable bits - I kid myself. Its 21.5 miles, a misleading figure - it takes me over an hour longer to complete than Wuthering Hikes very hilly 31.5 miles. Now the route is strange. After missing the summit of Illgill Head it heads north out of Wasdale right up to Pillar, going around the back of Wasdale peaks such as Yewbarrow and Kirkell to Great Gable. Yes, this is a Wasdale Peak, so now we skirt across the east side of Wasdale on the corridor route, just like Borrowdale fell race actually takes in Wasdale? No, We leave Wasdale to go around to Esk Hause for some reason, and then around the back of Scafell Pike to eventually head home. Horseshoe? Nope.Adding to the hardness of this race is the hardness of getting there in the car, even from Eskdale is takes 45 minutes and Im late in the queue for registration. Its warm and sunny at 11am, with cloud over some of the tops, as 250 runners mill around next to some confused cows at the National Trust campsite in Wasdale.

Maxine and Tom started the show with Andy C helping with navigation from Mile 2.The weather turned out very nice, even with some sun, although the boggy section across Hare Crag was pretty bad underfoot.

The race was started by Billy Bland who also dished out the prizes at the end. The organiser introduced him dryly as 'someone who knows a bit about fell running' to bemused silence from the gathered crowd.Afterwards a competitor started asking him if 'he knew any good routes around Borrowdale' - Knowone seemd to know he was a peerless and world renound fell runner with many of his records still standing after 30 years, including the Bob Graham Round (Under 14 hours and Knowone has got within an hour of it). So I seized my chance to speak to one of fell running titans - normally these sort of people are mobbed after fell races. He was an incredibly modest and amiable lad - He doesnt race anymore as he has problems with his feet, but is still race fit and cycles the area instead. And what were his top tips to good running performance?Well, he got 10 hours of high quality sleep every night when he was actively racing - And he didnt have anything to do with pills and potions, he always made sure he drank plenty of unadulterated water. So remember - Rest and Water.

This system is similar to the ChampionChip system previously used to time the race in that each entrant will wear a timing device on their shoe that will be "read" by mats. However, the timing device will be a tag, called a D-Tag, that you will receive attached to your race number. You must remove the D-Tag from your race number and attach it to your shoe prior to the race, following the instructions. The tag is secured to entrants' shoes using adhesive. The tag is disposable; it will not be collected after the race. Please ensure your tag is nice and round and not flat under your laces. Please see the video for full instructions. We are not using the optional clip. http://www.chronotrack.com/for-athletes/dtag_video/

All members are welcome to do the race and the run is FREE!!!Stainland Cross Country9/1/2011Venue Stainland Recreation Ground, Stainland Road, HX4 9HS (Just near the Red Lion Pub).Time 10.30am WYWL Course The WYWL league course is a new course for the 2010/11 season and covers approximately 4.5 miles. The course starts on Stainland Recreation Ground and takes the runners over a variety of tracks and fields around Stainland. The course is a two lap course and consists of one long lap and one shorter lap. The course covers most terrains so it would be advisable to wear trainers with good grip (trail or fell). There a 3 stiles to cross which could be slippery when wet, so please take real care when using them. There is also a short road section of about 30 yards, and although the runners will not need to cross the road, there is no pavement. It will be fully marshalled, but runners are asked to stick to the right hand side of the road.We have negotiated a special agreement with a local farmer to take down part of his fence and cross his land for race day only, so runners should not recce the course beforehand.Parking There are some parking spaces around Stainland recreation ground, however the majority of competitors will have to park in the village. We hope to have access to park at Bowling Green School and marshals will be on hand to direct people.Facilities We will have access to the Red Lion Pub from 9:30, which we will also use for the results. Runners and supporters will be able to use the toilet there and we've made arrangements to serve tea and coffee and some food (Sandwiches and cakes etc) for a small cost.

Ok, its not running, but then again neither is orienteering, anyway there was no way I was going to contemplate running this one.If you want to head south from Dewsbury and avoid trunk roads there are basically two options, Holme Moss or Strines Moor. I decide to meet the challenge head on and take the Holmfirth route over the pennines, then it should all seem like down hill after. I pack 2 water bottles, some energy bars, a gel, basic clothing and toolkit. All this info was in the race briefing which I had of course missed. The phrase 'they went through all that at the briefing' kept on being repeated to me in a variety of foreign accents.Frustration increased after racking my bike, as everyone was busily putting their labels, various chip tags and bags of equipment here and there as if it was second bloody nature. I collared a few bemused euro-randomers and eventually worked it out.Confidence was also being eroded by the weather forecast (35C), and the extensive array of superior hardware. Disc wheels were ten a penny here, and everyone's bikes were bristling with things I did not have. Knowhere in sight were the reassuring mountain bikes present in numbers at Leeds Tri.There was still time to trail around the mind-numbing 'Ironman City', which is fine if you like pumping techno and being effectively told that all your equipment is shit.I had under-estimated the seriousness and entry level of this event. Getting up at 4am was going to be hard.MorningThe bus was at 5am, so 4am was out of bed time. Downstairs at breakfast there was a big table again with a bloody film crew going around interviewing people - not what you want when you are trying to croissant-load and worry with you head down, They even followed us out to the bus-stop.On the bus I chatted to a chap from St. Albans who informed me of yet more race-briefing stuff, there was a section on the ride where you would be disqualified for overtaking, naturally. Also, there are 2 climbs in the lap you do twice, one is 1000ft. Great. He emphasised the need to go steady because of the heat (He didnt take his own advice and re-appeared at the hotel at 11pm after being stuck on a drip). So, into Ironman bloody City and last minute alterations to my bags of stuff. Then confusion over where to suit up, this was probably in the briefing. I wasnt the only one, I followed a bunch of people who turned out to have gone completely wrong, luckily the tanoy bloke spotted us all, and informed us in an Arnie like Austrian drawl 'And now I am worried about people here with their kit bags, you guys should be in ze iron-dome, as was in ze race briefing instructions'.Good Grief, it still takes ages to find the Iron-Whatever. Follow ze orders Englisher. In a last minute loo-stop I am informed in the queue that wearing my vest number under the wetsuit would get me disqualified - bloody-why??I end up running back to transition to dump my vest, and then running to the Iron-Ness to suit up, then up to the pier. Please no more, I half expected someone to say my swimhat was illegal or something, there was no number on it (there was about 5 numbers on everything else + a chip), but no - I had made it, and in some ways the most difficult stuff was over.

He seemed very well behaved! Maybe Glenn could print out some of the jokes he sends.Oh, and he has done very well on the nurse front, they seem to assigned him a stunning blond. If approaching from Dewsbury, follow the directions for Huddersfield, then after 400 yards take a right on the B6117, and the rugby club is about a mile down here on the left.If approaching from the north, take junction 26 off the M62 to Cleckheaton (A638), follow this road 3 miles through Cleck to Heckmondwike centre where you take a left on the B6117 (not the main road to Dewsbury), and after a mile the club is on your right.

We had a casualty on the first lap with Maxine dropping out, that was a blow for the ladies team as they were already depleted. Kevin Ogden had an outstanding race in sixth place to lead our runners home, but for the best running style I would give to Mark Oldroyd his arms and legs moving in unison he stood out in all the runners. For the worst running style I will have to give to Andy Cottier he looked stiff round the hips and legs and sometime gives the appearance he's running lame. Our men overall finished second.Veterans overall were fourthand Women overall were sixthThe team overall finished 4th

This converstion cropped up today when Flo remembered that the last time she'd done leg 2 of the Calderdale Way Relay, she did it with Dave - very steadily. This was because, as ever, we were short of runners so Dave took it upon himself to do leg 1,then keeping hold of the baton to continue straight on to do leg 2. Dave thought this was a good idea at the time - I guess he soon began to regret it - he did it though! Then cast your mind back to the Dewsbury Cross Country at Oakwell Hall in 2007. On speaking to lovely Angie (Dave's wife), her face said it all. Dave had been up at some ungodly hour, marking out the route in the dark (nutter!), followed by running the race, then clearing up after. I'm surprised he didn't play a part in the buttie making task for the runners.

How did it all go so wrong? How could I go from Love running to Hate running in one swift and unexpected movement? When the pain kicks in, I stop, simple as that!I decided to briefly tell you about my spectacular list of DNFs during 2009. Various titles have rumbled through my head for this masterpiece, such as 1 The Key to Successful DNFing2 How to DNF Successfully3 DNFing with a Smile on your face4 A DNF, A Failure.Brass Monkey January 2009Managed to get to approximately 1.5 miles and stopped dont know why, I just did. I felt upset about it but I soon forgot after wandering into York for an Americano!Liversedge Half Marathon February 2009Got halfway (better than Brass Monkey) before I decided Id had enough. Took my number off and ran in the opposite direction with a smile on my face! I was even brave enough to head back and watch the presentations.Trimpell 20One that I actually finished! I was spotted at around the 9 mile mark not looking happy was the quote. My excuse was Id just returned from a trip down under and was jet lagged!!! I staggered round in 2hr 35 compared to 2008 time of 2hr 20 I hated every minute.London Marathon April 2009This has got to be the ultimate of all DNFs! The creme de la creme! Managed to stagger over Tower Bridge (previous year I was skipping over!). I did actually have a knee problem this time, but no excuses, a DNF is a DNF! I have to say I enjoyed being interviewed by the BBC for this one and to ensure ultimate BBC coverage, I announced into the fluffy mike This is the Greatest Marathon in the World! Yuk, it ended up on the cutting room floor no doubt!I have to say, there were tears for this one what a flippin loser.

That experience left me doubting my ability, hating the flamboyance and sheer size of the race. I found the crowds distracting and the heat depleted my energy and spirits. So it was no surprise that I was dragging my feet at entering this years race, consequently missing the deadline! I had in my mind approximately 10 months prior, that I was going to defer my London place for the more rural 3 Peaks race, but something was niggling at me, something to do with unfinished business in London and times of sub 3.15. After a few choice phone calls and re-mortgaging to fund express postal services, I got myself a place in London.Training went well, my usual style of sporadic hit and miss sessions. Following no plan, just ear-wigging to what Flo and the others were up to. I have to admit I was feeling pretty excited about it, I felt quietly confident that I could pull it off this year. The Friday before the race and Flo text me 'are you nervous?' My response 'Im so excited and I can barely contain myself' and this was true, I just couldnt wait!

See a gallery of pictures here or the full gallery here.

We set off down the hill in glorious sunshine, soon I find myself in the lead - this was not in my race plan of following for at least the first 10 miles so I slow down a bit. The first big climb of the day up past Leeshaw Reservoir is taken at quite a tough pace and a couple of people edge past me, which is fine as I have not a clue where I am going.

Then comes a long and pleasant grassy descent following a conduit in which the pace goes steady. I decide to tuck in and chat to Paul a bit about races coming up and the Three Peaks, after all we have a long way to go.

So it took me approximately 3.5 minutes to check out the London Triathlonwebsite, dig out my credit card and grace them with approximately 70 quid for the pleasure of chuckin myself into a corner of the Royal Victoria Dock joy!Five minutes later, I start to take an empirical view of what Ive just doneBike Check (albeit a mountain bike)Wetsuit errmh, No!A passion for swimming errmh, No! Paul Ward won it last year when he had the best aggregate over the 2 races. Meanwhile he will be doing the hilly Spen 20 mile race in preparation on the 18th of March. Two runners who will be hoping to get near Hall's record time in the London will be Andrew Guiseley and Andrew Cottier, and Guiseley will be heading for the Spen 20 mile race in preparation, and follow that a week later with the Ackworth Half Marathon.Cottier ran the Tafford 10K last Sunday in a respectable 34th of the 362 runners in a time of 36mins8sec.Another hoping for a time under 3 hours and lead our ladies home will be Treena Johnson.

At point A the route enters the woods and takes a short sharp climb to point B. At B turn right up the main path through a gate opening to point C (A to C may be recognised as part of the Baildon Boundary Way). At C the route diverts left up another sharp climb to the wall corner and a loop back to F (points D and E are distinct left turns). From point F the route again picks up the Baildon Boundary Way to point G). Point G is a left hand turn BEFORE reaching the stile. Follow the main path from G to H crossing a stream by footbridge and crossing stile at H onto the main path.At H turn left under the railway bridge keeping left (the section H to I will have 2 way traffic but will be well marked). At Point I take a short diversion into the woods on the left emerging back on to the stoney track. Turn left up the stoney track until reaching Coach Rd J. Turn right at the top of the track and immediately right again into the fields. Turn immediately left in the fields and head to the field corner K. At the field corner turn right and follow the walked path back down to the stoney track (this section will be recognised as the reverse of the finish of the Guiseley Gallop). Turn left on reaching the stoney track back under the railway bridge (keeping left) and then continue straight ahead down the main track for some distance.Towards the bottom of the main track a path swings off to the left (L), follow this path up and over the railway line. After the bridge over the railway line (M), turn right down a narrow track over a footbridge and then back up to Gill Lane (N). On reaching Gill Lane, turn right and run down the road to another bridge. At the metal gate bear left into the woods (O) and follow a track down through the woods until reaching a main track (P). At the main track turn right back towards Gill Lane. At Gill Lane turn left then almost immediately right and right again (Q) down a sharp bank to a stream. Cross through the stream and up the hill continuing on to the far end of the woods (R). At the far end of the woods the route turns back on itself and comes almost back to the stream before turning right and right again (S) onto the main track heading back towards Esholt. At Spring Lane turn right then almost immediately left (T) up a narrow path back in to the woods. Follow the route through the woods climbing up to meet the main path at a stile (U).Turn left over the stile and continue on the main path to the gate opening in the wall (point C revisited). Through the gate opening take a narrow path diagonally off to the right (V) running along the top of the woods. Continue along this narrow path until reaching a short descent back to the main path. Turn left back up the main path (past point B again) and continue up the path almost to the gate opening in the wall. Here the route turns right down through the woods (this will be recognised as the reverse of the route taken up through the woods in the Guiseley Gallop) to reach the finish by the entrance to the woods (point A).Drinks/Changing afterwards at Esholt Sports Club PLEASE REMOVE ALL MUDDY SHOES BEFORE ENTERING THE CLUBHOUSE.

Park in Oakwell Hall Country Park car park (see P on map) or on the main A652 Bradford-Dewsbury road. Full details of the course and directions are given later on in this article. The course is hilly, ran on paths, turf and woodland, and unsuitable for spikes (total height gained is 550 ft, see profile further down). It consists of 3 loops which cover the grounds of the park and north of the M62. The approximate length is 4.75 miles, and will be well taped and marshalled. Please follow the instructions from the Marshal's as there is a couple of points where runners may cross - It will be advised that runners stay to their right. We have arranged to meet after the race at the White Bear Public House situated approximatly 1 mile from the park. Full directions will be given on the day, but it is virtually an immediate left turn, doubling back on yourself as you leave the car park, carrying on along the road, passing a childrens play area on your left, turning right along Kings Drive. The White Bear is at the end of the drive. Signs will be put out on the day pointing you in the right direction, if I remember!!!We hope that many of you can stay, as the landlady is willing to put hot food on for us.

I decide I am not going to keep this up and try to run at a more sensible pace for an old b**tard like me. A drag up to Oakenshaw and then we turn left and we have a nice run down to Hunsworth. When we get to the bottom of Hunsworth my head feels as though it's going to explode, we turn and start climbing back up.Some guys in front who passed me previously are beginning to walk, this looks promising as I gradually pass them and reach the entrance to the Fire Station.I see one guy in front who I recognise from Strathclyde Fire Brigade, who I normally have a tussle with, he is walking, I pass him slowly and head for the finish, he suddenly steams past me and I can do nothing to respond. I finish and grab a drink.Thank God that's over.%[339]%

I try to forget about this, but Julian looks decidely nervous right up the the whistle! The route is 11 miles long (theoretic minimum) and clocks up 4400 feet of climbing. Basically, your run up to the Helvellyn ridge from the north, near Great Dodd, then run the ridge to the summit cairn of Helvellyn and back. The gruesome start lives up to expectations, 1500 feet on grass mainly, with nothing to break up the strain on the calves - i resort to zig-zagging. At the top the climb continues at a lesser gradient - but is still un-runnable. When I do reach the checkpoint my legs are like jelly, and I cant run at all for a while. The ridge is no cakewalk either, with constantly changing terrain, from boulder fields to narrow troughed paths, you never find any rythmn and you are constantly being challenged by route decisions over boggy bits, rocky outcrops etc. Here I am approaching the summit of Raise.

Here if find Bill, Martin, Rodger and Andy ( apologies if I have forgotten anyone else). After the usual lecture about obeying marshals and the roads being open to traffic the race starts.Down the back straight and round the bend then out of the gate through the Car Park and onto the road toward Cleckheaton. As we go through the gate, to my surprise I find myself in the lead. This strange situation continues to the Bus station ( about 1mile) when the winner of the race come past and the pulls away up the climb.Still in Second place at the top of the first climb (2 miles) but I can tell there is a group hard on my heels.Up the next climb the guy who ends up second comes past me and as the winner had done before he pulls away. The rest of the group are still hard on my heels. I think they are just letting me take the wind especially on the exposed section between miles 3 and 4.As we run through Clifton village 1 guy pulls up level with me, I recognise him as some one I do battle with quite often. We run neck and neck all the way through Clifton and Hartshead, and we drop the rest of the chasing group. On the hill up to Roberttown he takes the lead but by the top (8 miles) I have regained 3rd place. He remains just behind me down the hill and past the 9 mile marker. In the last mile I manage to pull out a lead and get 3rd place in a time of 1 hour 30secs.Martin comes in, in seventh place, Andy in the top 20 and Rodger has a good run as he continues to get back to form.Treena did well and got third lady and Heather had a good run.Bill unfortunately had to pull out after a couple of miles due to an injury.Treena and I both got matching fleece jumpers as prizes for being 3rd man and lady. Creams all very well for the ladies but its not quite me, however I last saw it hanging in Lindas wardrobe. So my training tip for a Hilly 10 mile road race is a 200 K walk over the fortnight before!
